Mission Team Packet

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Grace to you and peace from God our Heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus Christ. We are looking forward to your mission team coming to Lake Placid soon. We believe that God is going to use your team to share the gospel boldly in our community, and to lay some groundwork for ministry in our area for years to come. This packet of information should give you much information about the area, the people you will encounter here in the Adirondacks, and the ministry of Lake Placid Baptist Church and North Country Ministries. Enclosed in the packet you will find:
Our desire is that everyone who comes on mission trips to the North Country will be trained in sharing their faith. That way, no matter what type of ministry project they are doing, if the Lord opens the door for the gospel to be shared, they will be equipped and ready to share. Some of the evangelism training programs that we believe are very effective are “Contagious Christianity,” “The NET,” “FAITH,” and “The Way of the Master.” Please train your group to share their faith before you arrive in Lake Placid. Again, let me say how grateful we are to the Lord for sending your team our way. As we partner together to do ministry, we pray that we will see God move in remarkable ways. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to call me. I will talk to you soon as we finalize the details for the trip. In Christ, Derek SpainDirector, North Country Ministries
Lake Placid Baptist Church and North Country MinistriesLake Placid Baptist Church Lake Placid Baptist Church was a mission church that began in 1979. With the Winter Olympics coming to Lake Placid in 1980, Southern Baptists saw a need to have a church in this community. From the beginning, the focus of the church was to reach out to and minister to the athletes and visitors to the small village from all over the world, as well as reach the people who live in the community year-round. In the mid 1980s, the focus of the church gradually drifted away from this vision. In the past few years, God has brought us back to His plan for us. Our church is very grateful that the Lord is giving us a second chance to do what He called us to do from the beginning. The mission of our church is to lead people to become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. This small, growing church in the middle of the Adirondacks has the opportunity to minister to people from all over the world.
North Country MinistriesIn 1998, the Adirondack Baptist Association saw a need to begin a ministry specifically to reach out to the tourists and athletes who were visiting the village of Lake Placid. Associational Missionary Jim Goforth was the catalyst to beginning this ministry. The Lord brought Jake Morrow, a North American Mission Board “US/C-2” missionary, to lead North Country Ministries (NCM) for two years. The ministry event that really “put North Country Ministries on the map” was volunteering at the Goodwill Games that came to Lake Placid in the winter of 2000. Since that time, NCM has built its reputation on being servants who will do all the jobs that nobody else wants to do.Over the years, NCM has provided volunteers for Ironman Triathlons, ESPN Great Outdoor Games, World Cup Winter Sports Events (Luge, Bobsled, Skeleton, Ski Jumping, Snowboarding, Hockey, Ice Skating) and more. The volunteers with NCM, who come from churches all over the Adirondacks and mission teams from across the USA, are known for their hard work, great attitude, willingness to serve behind the scenes or wherever needed, and unselfish spirit. We want the event organizers to know that we are not volunteering for what we can get; we are volunteering for what we can give. NCM works very closely with the Lake Placid Visitor’s Bureau and with ORDA (the Olympic Regional Development Authority), the organizers who bring these big events to our village. Through our volunteer efforts, the Lord has opened the door on numerous occasions for us to share the gospel with people, through servant evangelism, creative evangelism, and personal evangelism. Two verses that are very important to our ministry: Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” 1 Peter 3:15, “In your heart set apart Jesus as Lord. And always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have. Do this with gentleness and respect.”
About the Spain FamilyThe Spains felt the Lord calling them to the North Country, and they moved to the area in November of 2001. Derek previously served for nine years as one of the youth pastors at Hebron Baptist Church in Dacula, Georgia. Derek and Kim have been married for over 13 years, and both are originally from the suburbs of Atlanta. They have three children: Grant (9), Andy (6) and Emma Grace (3). Derek grew up in a strong Christian family, and was saved at the age of 13 years old, at a revival service at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Dacula, Georgia. Two days later he was baptized as a public testimony of his faith in Christ. After living for Christ throughout high school, he accepted God’s call to ministry in the summer of 1989. Kim also grew up in a strong Christian family. After struggling for years over whether or not she was born again, she gave her heart and life to Christ in May of 1995 as she and Derek knelt down beside their bed to pray. She was baptized the following Sunday. Over the past few years, the Spains have seen God do amazing things in their lives, in the lives of their children, and in the ministries in which they have served. In ministry in the North Country, Derek serves in three primary roles. First, he is the pastor of Lake Placid Baptist Church. This small, growing Southern Baptist church is nestled in a quaint village in the Adirondack Mountains. The church is reaching new individuals and families who are attracted to its warm atmosphere, praise and worship music, strong emphasis on Bible teaching, loving fellowship and community-minded ministry. As pastor, Derek’s desire is to lead the church to catch a vision for really impacting its community and the world for Christ. Derek’s second role is that of Director of North Country Ministries. He leads this ministry, looking for ways to allow God’s people to be involved in events that will bring them in touch with lost people from around the world. NCM is a ministry of the Adirondack Baptist Association. NCM mobilizes mission teams from churches within the ABA to serve Christ in Lake Placid and other communities. NCM partners with mission teams from all over North America to share the good news of Christ. Derek’s third role is that of Resort Missionary for the Baptist Convention of New York. In this role, Derek serves as a consultant and equipper of churches throughout New York State, helping them to develop resort and sports ministries in their areas.
The People of the Adirondacks Who They AreUpon coming to the Adirondack Mountains – the North Country, as it is called – you will notice people who are very nice and friendly. Each village and town is very small. Lake Placid, for example, has a population of about 3000 people. The main source of income in the region is tourism, so the locals love to see people from out of town. When you encounter local folks, they will tell you stories of past events, like the Olympics in 1980, snow storms through the years, events in the mountains, or famous people who have visited the village. Spiritually, most of the people in the region grew up as part of the Catholic, Episcopal, or Methodist Church. They were baptized as infants, but most do not attend church now. They speak using terms like “faith” and “God,” but most do not know Christ personally. Words that would describe the spiritual condition of most of the people in the North Country are: spiritually comfortable, searching for God, without Christ as Lord and Savior. The other people that you will encounter in the region are the tourists. They come to Lake Placid and the Adirondacks literally from all over the world. No matter what season of the year you are here, you will encounter people who are here to experience the beauty of God’s creation in the mountains, people who are in town for sporting events, and people who are looking to escape from the hustle and bustle of city-life by shopping, dining and relaxing in a small mountain village. Spiritually, some of the guests are looking for God, and the mountains are drawing them to Him. But most of these folks do not have a relationship with Christ. Others who visit do not even think about God whatsoever. They are so focused on sports or other activities in town that they do not have time for God. How We Seek to Reach ThemGod is sovereign, and He works in ways that are mysterious to us. Therefore, we do not claim to know everything about reaching people with the gospel in the Adirondacks. We have discovered, however, some biblical ways that God has led us to that have been very effective strategies for sharing the gospel in this area. First, we use a strategy known as servant evangelism. We look for ways to meet people’s needs and therefore provide an opportunity to share Christ with them. For example, at some of our winter events, we give out free handwarmers, and when people ask us why we are doing that, we tell them about Jesus. A second strategy is known as creative evangelism. Utilizing arts such as music, drama, clowning and other creative activities, such as giving away free goody bags and free cowbells, we try to present the gospel in ways that catch people’s attention. The third strategy is personal evangelism. We seek to share our faith directly with people, telling them our story of our relationship with Christ. We seek to incorporate Scripture into our testimonies so that they will hear the truth of the gospel boldly. The key when a person shares their testimony here is to listen. Listen closely to what the other person says to you, so that you will know how to share with them, and know how far to take a conversation. Many conversations that we have with people are seeds that are planted so that God can bring about salvation in their lives in the future. But be ready: God may give you an opportunity here to lead someone to the Lord!
Preparation through PrayerWhenever you share the good news of Christ you are involved in spiritual warfare. Our enemy, the devil, does not want people to be saved. He is a liar, thief and destroyer of lives. Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). We must be prepared for a spiritual battle when we go on mission with God.Ephesians 6:10-20 says: Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. We ask you to bathe your mission trip in prayer. Here are some suggestions:
What Others Are Saying About NCM
“The team from Hudson Baptist Association had an awesome time during the World Cup Snowboard Competition. Derek’s strategy for engaging people with the gospel at their level is on target. Giving out hand warmers on a cold day opens up conversations spiritually! I overheard more than one conversation between spectators and one of our team members about why we were there. Our team walked away with a better sense of how to creatively evangelize. One suggestion to your team before you come: Pray, Pray, Pray! This is a challenging ministry trip. People don’t come to ski in Lake Placid so they can find out about Jesus. For most people, he’s not even on their radar screen. We went, trusting God for divine appointments.” Sean Pierce, Hudson Baptist Association, Schenectady, NY
“This past weekend we spent our 52nd wedding anniversary in Lake Placid. Lake Placid is one of our favorite places!! We live in the foothills of the Adirondacks, so appreciate all the ADK's. We encountered two very nice, well mannered, sharp, friendly, clean cut young people as we drove into the parking lot at the Olympic Jumping Complex. We stopped and had a nice visit with them. They gave us some hand warmers and then asked if we'd like a couple bags of goodies. We accepted both. We asked them what they were doing and they told us they were from Florida and were in Lake Placid on a ministry mission. We told them how much we appreciated their ministry and that they were exemplifying what Jesus did when he was here. We are very impressed with NCM...we have looked at your website. I believe that what you are doing at NCM is so effective, so much more than just saying the "words" or preaching your religion (as some folks might call it). The two young people that we encountered certainly were good examples of Christianity. (We also talked to a man at the complex in the evening that was handing out freebies.) So often we have turned off others by our preaching and/or being "spiritual" but not loving and giving. Amen to what you are doing. Your website is excellent!!!! Keep up the good work.” Gail and Larry Cramer
Sample Ministry Project DescriptionsAthletes Bible Study at the Olympic Training CenterEach week, NCM leads a Bible study for the athletes who are training at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid. Some members of your team may be able to attend this Bible study with us.
Coffee House/Open GymYoung adults and students in our area love to just “hang out,” but there are no shopping malls nearby. We have found that providing a free Christian coffee house at Lake Placid Baptist Church will attract many of them. Christian music and other entertainment (provided by mission teams) along with coffee, soda and snacks creates an environment where spiritual conversations can take place. In addition, the gym can be utilized for sports at the same time, and our youth room has a pool table and ping pong table.
Community EncouragementA few times each year, NCM partners with Lake Placid Baptist Church and other local churches to deliver cookies or other “goodie bags” to local businesses, workers, etc. God has used these community encouragement ministries to bring joy to people in great ways. This ministry is fun, exciting and a good “first step” toward us sharing Christ with people in our community.
Creative Ministries at Mid’s Park Outdoor PavilionAre you bringing a band, choir, puppet team, clowns, drama or other creative ministries? There is a pavilion right in the heart of the village, overlooking Mirror Lake, where we arrange for groups to perform. It is a great way to spread the joy of Christ to the crowds. We also can help arrange for you to minister in Saranac Lake and other areas at their outdoor pavilions.
Hiking MinistryThere are 46 peaks to hike in our area. Ministry here could include giving out free water bottles along the hiking trails in order to strike up witnessing situations. It could also include hiking with groups of local teens or children to open a door to share Christ.
Ironman TriathlonMinistry at the Ironman Triathlon (July 16-22, 2008) will include spreading the gospel via creative ministries (face painting, balloon animals, free sno cones) at our NCM booth, assisting with registration, serving at two banquets, hosting a pancake breakfast for the athletes, running an aid station on race day (Sunday), and leading an Ironman Outreach Worship Service on Saturday.
Olympic MinistryWe are praying that the Lord will open doors this summer for us to impact the lives of future Olympic athletes directly. Ministries could include: hosting a block party for a team, serving as managers at their practices, or volunteering in some other way. If your group is interested in this ministry, let us know ASAP, because this will take some coordination with coaches, etc, if the Lord opens the door. Personal EvangelismWhile you are here, God will bring people your way who you can share Christ with. Be sensitive to these situations and always be ready to share your story with them. As you go, make disciples (Mt 28:19).Prayer WalkingBecause of the spiritual lethargy of this area, we are praying that God would send revival to this area like never before. We will provide you with a map of key areas that we would love to see bathed in prayer. Walk around, enjoy the beauty of the area, and pray! Prison MinistryThe community of Ray Brook, NY is only five (5) miles from Lake Placid, and both a state and federal prison are located there. The federal prison has provided an open door for us to share the gospel on Monday nights at their “Baptist” Bible study. Individuals must be at least 18 years old to do this ministry. Background checks on each person will be done by the federal prison, and must be completed weeks before your arrival. Sports Outreach EventsThe half-court gymnasium at Lake Placid Baptist Church can be utilized for outreach events using sports. Sports such as basketball, volleyball, floor hockey and others can be used to attract children, teenagers and adults. Be prepared for conversations with people about the Lord as you take a break, etc.
Winter Sports MinistryNCM volunteers at many winter sporting events each year, including ski jumping, luge, bobsled, skeleton, snowboard, figure skating and hockey events. Our ministry there is servant evangelism, and we ask God to open doors for witnessing conversations. Worship ServicesLake Placid Baptist Church and other area churches would love to host groups that desire to lead in worship through music, drama, testimonies and/or speaking.
Youth EventsWe can help plan an event or events that reach out to children and/or teenagers in our communities. Such events might include: game night, putt-putt, clowns, puppets, movie night, skiing, tubing, ice skating, other sports, concerts, block parties and more. Logistics

Cost per person per day for meals during Ironman for 2007 are as follows: Breakfast $3.00, Lunch $5.00, Dinner $7.00. Please make your check for food payable to “North Country Ministries.” LodgingThere are many options for lodging, depending on the needs and desires of your group. 1. Lake Placid Baptist Church – LPBC built its new addition with mission teams in mind. The church has four showers, a commercial kitchen, a washer and dryer, and plenty of floor space for air mattresses. (Note: there is a Laundromat less than ½ mile from LPBC for additional laundry needs.) Separate sleeping areas are provided for males and females. The mission team must bring its own sleeping bags, air mattresses, pillows, towels, etc. The cost for staying at LPBC is $5.00 per person per night to help cover the cost of utilities. Please make your check for lodging at LPBC made payable to “Lake Placid Baptist Church.” 2. Hotels & Motels – Lake Placid has many hotels & motels in all prices ranges; the “Town House Lodge” (518-523-2532) is right next door to our church, so you might try there first; the “Town and Country Motor Inn” (1-888-523-6640) is only a two-minute walk from Lake Placid Baptist Church; also, check the Lake Placid website www.lakeplacid.com, and click on “Where to Stay” for rates and availability of other hotels & motels. 3. North Country Community College – may be available during summer months; each dorm is a 3-bedroom suite with private bath, den & kitchen (sleeps 6-8); fairly new dorms and affordable rate; contact the college directly for reservations 1-888-879-6222. ClothingKeep these two thoughts in mind: 1) dress for the weather, and 2) dress conservatively.
Winter Clothing Recommendations Winter boots, wool socks First layer: long underwear (good fabrics: polyester, polypropylene) Second layer: long sleeve shirt or turtleneck, fleece pants Third layer: fleece jacket, ski pants (or other waterproof/windproof pants)* Winter coat Winter hat (wool, acrylic, fleece) Waterproof gloves or mittens Backpack (for extra layers of clothing, and ministry supplies)
*Jeans are fine as your third layer (instead of ski pants) unless you plan to be skiing or standing outside for long periods of time. In general, cotton is not recommended for socks or any other layer. Cotton is not very warm here. You could wear a cotton long sleeve shirt if that was the only cotton layer you wear.
It is fine to wear the same clothing several days in a row here. The layers keep clothing from needing to be washed as often. You will find that the locals have one fleece jacket, for instance, that they wear just about every day. Bottom line: if you do not own the layers needed, please borrow them from someone, so that you do not unnecessarily buy lots of clothing that you will only use on this trip.
Summer Clothing Recommendations Comfortable boots and/or shoes (good for lots of walking), comfortable socks Conservative shorts, jeans, pants Conservative shirts (short sleeve and/or long sleeve) Sweatshirt and/or light jacket (it gets cool at night even in the summer months) Backpack (for ministry supplies)
NCM Shirts & HatsYour witness in the community will be enhanced as you wear NCM gear. We have seen that the more people wearing NCM gear, the more people are asked, “Who are you guys? What does NCM stand for?” which leads to witnessing conversations. In the summer months, we have polos, t-shirts, baseball caps and visors. In the winter months, we have winter hats and fleece jackets. Let NCM help you decide which items would be best for your team to purchase. Costs are very reasonable and make great souvenirs as well. Remember: we’re not t-shirt salesmen; we’re simply looking for effective ways to share the gospel!
Costs for 2007: NCM Hats (winter hats, baseball caps, visors) $15.00 each NCM T-shirts (kids & adult sizes available) $10.00 each NCM Polo shirts (kids & adult sizes available) $25.00 each NCM Fleece jackets (kids & adult sizes available) $40.00 each OfferingsYou may not take an offering or solicit donations for any reason during a ministry event. SuppliesGroups are totally responsible to provide their own ministry supplies and materials for ministry projects. NCM can give assistance on where to order some supplies that will be used in ministry here. Sometimes it is easier for us to order the supplies for you. We encourage creativity in evangelism efforts, but consult with us before ordering evangelism and ministry supplies; we don’t want you to spend money on supplies that will not be very effective in sharing the gospel in this culture. TransportationGroups are totally responsible for their own transportation. Buses, vans and cars are all welcome in Lake Placid, and although parking is limited in the village, there are plenty of places for vehicles to park and plenty of room to get around.
The two major airports closest to Lake Placid are Albany, NY and Burlington, VT. Both of these are about a 2-hour drive away. The Montreal Dorval Airport is about a 2 ½-hour drive from Lake Placid. Stewart International Airport (Newburgh, NY) is a 4-hour drive from Lake Placid (but many times has really good rates for flights). Rental cars are available at all four major airports. A limited number or rental cars/vans are available in Lake Placid and in Lake Clear, NY. There is a small, regional airport about 30 minutes away from Lake Placid: the Adirondack Regional Airport (Lake Clear, NY). The nearest Amtrak train station is Westport, NY, which is a one-hour drive away.
